A non-profit organization, we offer a fully-staged role with chamber orchestra to each of our accepted singers. Situated in stunning Orvieto just an hour north of Rome, we provide world-class training with a faculty to student ration of 1:2. We also provide intensive voice lessons, coachings & masterclasses, dramatic preparation, "recitativo intensives," character study, Italian language study, & postural-alignment (Feldenkrais Method based) lessons. Our tuition includes room AND board in an intimate setting where students and faculty dine together nightly just paces away from the inspiring Duomo.
Our institute is a space-limited program for up to 18 emerging artists and talented undergraduates who are looking to perform overseas and sing in a fully-staged, reviewed production, to coach their Italian repertoire with Italian faculty, as well as to work on language and theater skills. Yoga and a mind-body-awareness series based on the Feldenkrais Method and up-to-date performance psychology, as well as a lunch lecture series on life as a performer are also included in our program.
Join us just over an hour north of Rome on June 2-23 for a role in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte or our "boutique opera," Il giuoco del quadriglio,by Antonio Caldara. In addition to these two, fully-staged operas, we will perform recitals in a variety of other venues including the Mayor's Palace, the Sala Unità d’Italia del Palazzo Comunale on the central Piazza Repubblica, as well as in highly public local festivals, restaurants, and churches.
Orvieto ~ View From The Side
We offer a notable assembly of faculty performers, teachers, conductors, and pianists who will work to inspire a new level of healthy confidence and preparation for our select group of singers. Our program encourages friendship, intimacy and collegiality, emphasized by regular meals together with faculty and performers, and mind-body-spirit classes that will foster personal development and comfort with one another. Auditions can be completed by video, or in person by appointment in Oakland (near San Francisco), Tucson, Arizona. We will also audition out of Los Angeles and Chicago in the winter if any spaces remain in the casting of the operas.
The Summer Vocal Academy of Orvieto and Opera Argentario are programs founded in partnership with the Comune of Orvieto. We aspire to foster international collaboration and language exchange, as well as to honor the legacy of opera that is Italy's gift to the world. In summer of 2019, students will train with the Academy and perform with Opera Argentario in a city that is being considered as a UNESCO world heritage site. Our hotel is situated in the most prestigious part of the city off a small square proximate to amenities, parks, a trail for walking or jogging, and major historical sites.
Italy is the birthplace of opera, with 400 years of history and development still circulating richly in its cities and culture. While there is not necessarily an exclusively Italian opera focus, bel canto will be at the forefront of our lives as we spend this wonderful time together. This will be a truly international festival, owing much to the host city of Orvieto, as well as to the arrival of faculty and students from Italy and beyond.
